The ‘media’ is a challenge in terms of crisp definition as it is so much a dimension of contemporary 21st century living. Underpinned by the concept of the digital, ‘digital media’ is ubiquitous and is embedded in all aspects of social and technological interaction. Since the 1990’s we have been keen to map its development in art education and make links with the international research development that serves and supports the notion of a global society.

The title was supposed to have read The Medium is the Message but the typesetter had made an error. When Marshall McLuhan saw the typo he exclaimed, 'Leave it alone! It's great, and right on target! This media section of this publication attempts to cover some aspects of its application with a blend of methodologies and references to the interdisciplinary contexts. These initiatives have ranged across a number of technologies and interfaces and have supported contributions in special needs education, curriculum design, digital archives and rationales for media development and controlled intervention.
