2. International Projects on CD ROM
The Vapaatila project (translated as 'Informal Spaces' or Free Space')represented the first multilateral, international collaboration for the Art and Design Department in the Virtual School. The idea for the project grew out of interest in researching space and environment in the context of the visual arts and digital technology.
Students in Helsinki began the project by taking photos with disposable pocket cameras to record self portraits and personal spaces that reflected recreational time and friendship groups. These images subsequently formed the initial starting point for their work. |
The idea of working in another context and place, in an limited amount of time gave rise to an interesting group dynamic. The simple fact of going to another country, of being confronted with another culture, different social conventions and levels of confidence in media workshops created an exciting basis for collaborative work. The preliminary research tended towards several sub-themes, predominantly the relation with time (past, present and future). The model presented in this programme was ICT as a dimension of creative work and not as exclusively screen based outcomes.

This CD ROM complemented the original website used in New York for our Insea World Congress presentation in 2002
Wholearthmedia is a network of art/design educators who have worked systematically over recent years to generate critical contexts for the use of ICT in art education. An archive/ePortfolio/Social network supported joint research and curriculum development with material shared more widely through associated electronic communities. |
Behind the Screen was a three year collaboration between Brazil, Finland and United Kingdom. Students used digital media to create artwork that critiques the effects of technologies on identity, politics through intercultural contexts and exchange, drawing on a range of source material. The inter-cultural project explores a range of media students apply to achieve their diverse outcomes.
|
All intercultural projects are problematic and our international workshop in Beja, Portugal was no exception. Entitled- 'A Voyage of Discovery' the project included participants from
five different countries (Brazil, England, Finland, Holland and Portugal) and each considered the exploration of ICT/ Art as powerfully engaging. The workshops gave the students an opportunity to consider how their cultural heritage affected their present-day life and vice-versa. |
Cultural Identity, Digital Media and Art Education constituted the three components of this project. The exploration of notions of cultural identity invariably meant that emotions were dealt with in terms of definition and antecedents. The personal material brought to the workshop drew on emotionally loaded contexts and the work produced gave expression to the kind of situations that typically elicit the emotion concerned.
